A family-run team thatbuilds the ground beforeit lays the surface
Established in 2013 and backed by more than 25 years on the tools, John Ruben Ltd gives Potters Bar homeowners a driveway that still looks and drains correctly in a decade, because the excavation, base, drainage and surfacing are all our own work.

Who we help and what we specialise in
We work for homeowners across Potters Bar, Hertfordshire and the north London border who want one job, done once, by one team. Most of our work is resin bound driveways: a permeable, seamless surface that suits period frontages and newer homes alike. But the reason people call us is rarely the resin itself. It is that the driveway they had before sank, cracked, held water or shed gravel, and nobody would take responsibility for why.
The answer is almost always underneath. A surface is only as good as the ground built to carry it, and that ground is where most driveway contracts quietly cut corners. We specialise in the whole job: excavation and muck away, engineered sub-bases, concrete bases where the design calls for one, drainage, kerbs and edge restraints, then the surface. Because John manages all of it, there is nobody to blame and nobody to chase.
A typical project is John plus two or three team members, scaled up with experienced groundworkers, labourers and trusted subcontractors when a job calls for it. Whoever is on site, the work is run to the same standards and you still deal with John and Amy.
Alongside driveways we take on patios, block paving, groundworks, foundations and footings, drainage, landscaping, fencing and artificial grass, often as part of a single front-and-back transformation, and often for builders who need the ground right before they start.
John Ruben Ltd has traded since 2013, and the experience behind it runs to more than 25 years of groundwork and hard landscaping. We are family-run, which in practice means the name on the van is the name that answers the phone, and our reputation locally is the only marketing that has ever mattered; it is why our Google rating sits at 5.0.
Our mission and the standards we hold to
Our mission is simple: leave every property with groundwork that outlasts the surface sitting on it. We do not publish accreditation badges we cannot evidence. What we can put in writing are our 10-year workmanship guarantee and the standards every job is run to, and you are welcome to hold us to them.
Dig it out properly or don't start
Depth is set by what the ground and the vehicle load demand, not by how quickly the job can be finished. If a driveway needs 200mm out, 200mm comes out.
Water is designed for on day one
Falls, channels and soakaways are planned before the first spade goes in, so surface water leaves the site instead of sitting against your house.
The same team, start to finish
John runs every stage himself, from excavation and base through to the finished surface, working with our own groundworkers and a small number of trusted long-term subcontractors on larger jobs.
One point of contact
You speak to the same person from the first site visit to the final sweep down. No chasing trades, no conflicting answers, no gaps between stages.
Written estimates, plainly worded
You get a clear written estimate setting out what is included and a realistic timescale. If a cheaper approach genuinely suits your ground, we will say so.
Site left as we found it
Materials kept tidy, access kept usable, waste taken away. Neighbours notice how a site is run, and so do we.
Guarantee, insurance and how we quote
The commercial side of a job should be as clear as the work itself. Here is exactly what is covered, what we are insured for, and how pricing and payment work.
10-year workmanship guarantee
Our work is covered by a 10-year workmanship guarantee. It covers workmanship issues; it does not cover accidental or third-party damage, misuse, or movement caused by an existing base or ground conditions outside our control. Where applicable, the Suds resin system also carries the relevant manufacturer's guarantee, subject to their terms.
Fully insured
John Ruben Ltd holds both public liability and employers liability insurance.
Suds resin, SuDS compliant
We install resin bound surfacing using the Suds resin system. Laid correctly on the right build-up, it is permeable and SuDS compliant, with each site assessed individually for drainage, existing base and ground conditions.
Free site visits and fixed-price quotes
Site visits and quotes are always free, normally back with you within one working day of the visit (longer for larger or more complex projects). Quotes are fixed price against the agreed scope. On larger groundwork jobs, if unforeseen ground conditions appear once we excavate, any extra cost is discussed and agreed with you before we go any further.
Clear payment terms
On larger projects a deposit secures the booking with the balance by agreement; smaller jobs are paid on completion. Everything is set out in the quotation before work starts. Payment is by bank transfer only, against an invoice showing John Ruben Ltd bank details.
The seven stages behind every job
Whether it is a driveway, a patio or a set of footings, the sequence does not change. Consistency is what makes the finish predictable.
- 01
Excavation
The old surface and sub-soil come out to the correct depth. No shortcuts, no laying over failing ground.
- 02
Ground preparation
A compacted, engineered sub-base built to carry vehicle loads for decades, not seasons.
- 03
Concrete bases
Where the job calls for it, we form and pour the base as part of the same programme rather than handing it to an unknown trade.
- 04
Drainage
Falls, channels and soakaways designed in from day one so surface water goes where it should.
- 05
Edging
Kerbs and restraints set solid, keeping lines crisp and stopping the surface from creeping.
- 06
Surface installation
Resin bound, block paving or paving, laid by the same team that prepared the ground beneath it.
- 07
Project management
One point of contact from first site visit to final sweep down. No juggling trades.
